Madeleine Jarvis, a Salisbury based artist who works predominantly with oil paint. Her interior portraits investigate themes of personal narrative and memory, in particular how they are shaped by the environments that we move through our lives in. Her work explores the act of recollection and how interiors can bridge the gap between the past and present.

 

She works from film photographs, examining the way we choose to document our lives and how that clashes with our perspective of our past. She is particularly interested in spaces, and the stories they tell of those that inhabit them. She prefers paint as her medium as she feels that there is something in the act of painting, in using marks to express her relationship to the spaces, which balances between a clinical and honest rendering and an almost idealised reimagining of the past.

 

Jarvis graduated from Bath Spa University in 2023. She has participated in group exhibitions at Bargehouse, Oxo Tower, London, (2023); Willesden Gallery, London 2024, Noho Gallery, Soho (2025).
